Function-first assessment
Tongue Tie Assessment for Babies
A tongue tie is about function, not just appearance. At The Birth Life, tongue-tie assessment is led by Yogyata Wadhwa — IBCLC and paediatric feeding therapist trained in infant oral motor assessment — so the decision is based on how your baby actually feeds, not only on how the tongue looks.
Signs parents often notice
Painful or pinched latch, clicking or slipping off the breast, very long or very short feeds, slow weight gain, reflux-like fussiness, and nipple damage that keeps returning.
What an assessment involves
A detailed feeding history, an infant oral motor assessment (tongue, jaw, palate and suck), observation of a full feed, and cervical auscultation where indicated.
The goal is to understand how feeding works for your baby — and only then discuss options.
After the assessment
You leave with a clear plan. Many babies are managed first with feeding strategies and positioning. Where a release is genuinely indicated, you get referral guidance plus lactation support before and after the procedure, so feeding actually improves.
Frequently asked questions
Does every tongue tie need a release (frenotomy)?
No. Assessment is function-first: many babies feed well with skilled latch and positioning support alone. A release is discussed only when function is clearly restricted.
Can a tongue-tie assessment be done online?
The history, feed observation and video review work well online. A hands-on oral motor examination is best done in-clinic at Sector 49, Gurugram.
The Birth Life — 419, Fourth Floor, Eros City Square, Sector 49, Gurugram, Haryana 122018. No home visits — in-clinic in Sector 49, Gurgaon and online worldwide.
